United Martial Arts

With a mix of happiness and sadness, we see our tenth birthday come to a close.  Our birthday picnic was a joyful and poignant experience, as we celebrated the first 10 years of United Martial Arts in Arizona, and look forward to the next 10.

                        Traditional             Health, Fitness, and Self-Defense

Martial Arts                      For the Entire Family

In 1995, in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, a group of martial arts teachers met to brainstorm what name would best describe their traditional system of teaching a complete, comprehensive martial art.  Master Doyle Perry and Senior Instructor Daniel Stillson were part of that meeting, where someone suggested the name "United Martial Arts".  The name gained nearly immediate consensus and was adopted.  In a short time, it began to spread around the world.  There are now dozens, and maybe hundreds, of schools world-wide which call themselves United Martial Arts.

In 1998, Master Perry moved to Arizona and opened United Martial Arts of Phoenix at 32nd Street and Thunderbird.  By the year 2001, the school had outgrown that facility and moved to its present location on 32nd Street, just South of Shea.

United Martial Arts of Phoenix is an independent school.  We have no ties with any of the many schools throughout the city, state or country which have adopted our name.  They may be our friends, but, we are not affiliated with any of them in any way.  Nor are we affiliated with any of the "associations" which use the name.  A cursory internet search reveals a "United Martial Arts Society", a "World United Martial Arts Federation", a "United Martial Arts Alliance", a "World United Martial Arts Alliance", a "United Martial Arts International Guild", and two "United Martial Arts Associations".  This disclaimer is not intended to defame or belittle any of the other schools or organizations mentioned above.  It is only intended to clarify our independence, and that we are not hampered by having to follow the rules of some bureaucratic organization.

At United Martial Arts of Phoenix, our traditional Kung Fu system includes a complete set of skills.  Our unparalleled street self-defense includes blocking and striking with the hands and feet, also taught in Japanese Karate and Korean TaeKwonDo, and various other common styles.  It includes the joint-locking techniques of Chinese Chin Na, also taught as Japanese Aikido and Korean Hapkido.  It includes the body-control and throwing techniques of Chinese Rho-Tau, also taught as Japanese Judo and Jujitsu, and as Korean Udo.  It includes martial arts exercise forms developed over many centuries to support the self-defense and promote health and fitness.  This gives students the complete self-defense abilities they need for real-life situations, with the ability to use the minimum amount of force necessary to subdue any attacker and effectively control any situation.  Traditional Kung Fu also includes a variety of Chinese martial weapons, the practice of which develops strength, stamina, coordination, concentration, and the ability to use anything as a self-defense weapon if necessary.

Our Instructors and students are eligible to be certified by the prestigious United States Martial Arts Association, which is headed by O'Sensei (Grandmaster) Philip Porter, one of the most respected martial artists in the world today.  Master Perry is also certified by the Black Belt Secret Society, a distinguished group of Grandmasters and Masters of Kung Fu, Wushu and Kajukenbo.

What makes United Martial Arts unique?

1.   Too many martial art schools have followed the lead of the health clubs, with slick, hard-sell sales pitches, to quickly

convince prospects to sign a huge contract.  We have so much confidence in our curriculum and professionalism

that we have no need to use contracts!  Our courses are all paid on a month-to-month basis.  If you are ever unhappy

with us, you can just walk away with no penalty.

2.   Our introductory courses include a free uniform and United Martial Arts t-shirt, a free private lesson and unlimited class attendance.

3.   We do not put a calendar on promotions.  Student evaluations are conducted every other month for all students,

and you get what you earn!  This is great for those who love a challenge and who put in extra effort.

4.   Student evaluations (belt-testing) are an integral part of all our regular courses.  This means there is no additional,

      hidden charge for it.

5.   You will not find a cleaner, more professional school.  You will be proud to show it off to your family and friends.

6.   We have unparalleled success in helping students of all ages develop strength of character.

7.   Master Perry's 40+ years of training and teaching in hand-to-hand combat and self-defense is an amazing advantage for students.

6.   Our Instructors are personally trained by Master Perry and certified by the prestigious United States Martial Arts Association.
